A man was arrested today in connection with a shooting near a high school in Portland, Oregon, which wounded four young people that are believed to be students.

The suspect, described as being in his late teens or early 20s, is said to have fled the scene of the shooting on foot with two males of similar age.

The shooting occurred yesterday at 12.15pm local time close to Rosemary Anderson High School in north Portland.

One of the victims, Taylor Zimmers, 16, remains in critical condition. David Jackson-Liday, 20, and Labraye Franklin, 17, have been treated at hospital while a 17-year-old girl was treated at the scene by medics for a graze wound.

At least three of the victims, who are believed to have attended the school, ran into the building after being shot.

Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said the suspect may be affiliated with a gang but it's not known if the shooting was gang-related or "a personal beef". An argument may have preceded the shooting, he added.

The school is described as “a community-based alternative high school” where around 200 students who have been expelled or have dropped out are given a “last chance” to complete their secondary education, its website states.
