Dash-cam footage has shown the moment a plane crashed through power cables and burst into flame before hitting the ground near a busy road.

The Piper light aircraft can be seen veering into shot on the right and, as it clips a power line, flames erupt from its side before it disappears from view.

Miraculously the pilot and passenger walked away from the crash, according to Q13 FOX. Firefighters said no one was seriously hurt.

Images tweeted by authorities showed a large amount of sand spread near the downed plane, after a fuel tank ruptured.

Q13 FOX said investigators believed the pilot tried to land on a clear stretch of road in Mukilteo, Washington state, after losing engine power.

The plane came down in Harbour Pointe Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon and damaged several vehicles, according to local police.

The pilot was reported to be from the neighbouring state of Oregon. He was losing too much altitude to be able to return to his home airfield, Q13 FOX reported.

Officials said power was restored to nearby homes soon after the crash.
