Rielle Hunter, whose affair with the former US Senator John Edwards wrecked his presidential ambitions, said yesterday that they were no longer in a relationship.

Ms Hunter, 48, told ABC's Good Morning America television programme that she and Mr Edwards split up last week, but would continue to share parenting duties of their four-year-old daughter.

It comes after Mr Edwards stood trial accused of seeking more than $900,000 from two wealthy supporters to conceal his affair with Ms Hunter and her pregnancy during his bid to win the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008. Mr Edwards's wife had cancer at the time and died in 2010. He was acquitted on one campaign-finance charge, and a judge declared a mistrial on five other charges after the jury deadlocked last month.
