A small explosion caused minor damage to a US military recruiting centre in New York's Times Square area early today but there were no injuries, police said.

NY1 television said a small bomb or incendiary device was thrown at the recruiting station around 3.45am, causing a small break in one of the windows.

Police said there was minor damage to the building's door.

Police closed off traffic in the streets around the busy tourist area between 42nd Street and 44th Street.

Subway trains were bypassing the busy Times Square subway station, NY1 said.
