Solar-powered plane lands near Washington

A solar-powered plane bidding to fly across the U.S. has landed at Dulles International Airport near the nation's capital, with one leg to New York left.

Solar Impulse's website said the aircraft landed at 12:15 a.m. EDT (0415 GMT) Sunday after a flight of 14 hours and four minutes from Cincinnati. It says pilot Bertrand Piccard was at the controls for the last time on the multi-leg journey and colleague Andre Borschberg would fly the remaining Washington-to-New York leg in early July.

It's the first bid by a solar plane capable of being airborne day and night without fuel to fly across the U.S, at a speed of about 40 mph. The plane began May 3 in California, flying via Arizona, Texas, Missouri and Ohio to Dulles in Washington's northern Virginia suburbs.
