Judge Sonia Sotomayor won US Senate approval yesterday to become the first Hispanic on the US Supreme Court.
The Democratic-led Senate voted largely along party lines, 68-31, to approve President Barack Obama's nomination of Sotomayor, a federal appeals judge in New York, for the lifetime appointment.
Sotomayor, 55, is expected to be sworn in on Saturday.
