Dominique Strauss-Kahn claimed yesterday that he had diplomatic immunity and asked a court in New York to dismiss a civil suit filed by the hotel maid who says he sexually assaulted her.

Lawyers for the former International Monetary Fund chief argued that judges in the Bronx could not try the case because Mr Strauss-Kahn's time as head of the fund gives him immunity from the litigation.

Mr Strauss-Kahn, 62, was initially charged with attempted rape after the maid said he attacked her in his hotel suite on 14 May. The case was eventually dismissed.
