Time Warner Cable ordered to pay woman $230,000 for harassing 'robocalls'
Cable provider made 153 calls to woman, many after she complained to company
Time Warner Cable must pay a Texas woman nearly $230,000 after the company harassed her with 153 "robocalls", a federal judge has ruled.
After receiving dozens of calls, Araceli King complained to a Time Warner representative and told the company that she did not know the customer for whom they were calling, the Associated Press reported.
She continued to receive the automated phone calls even after she filed a lawsuit against the company for harassment.
A Time Warner spokeswoman said the company is reviewing its options after the ruling and will determine how to proceed.
Judge Alvin Hellerstein tripled the usual $1,500 penalty per call because he said Time Warner's actions were "particularly egregious", according to the AP.
Ms King's lawyer said this ruling should send the message to consumers that they do not have to put up with it when companies won't stop with the automated calls.
