Powerful storms ripped through the US Midwest on Wednesday, killing at least 12 people, including six in Illinois who were crushed when a tornado lifted a house and dropped it on them, authorities said.

In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, six people died when winds dropped another house on top of homes.
