Joe Biden appears to be inching closer towards the White House, with the Democratic presidential nominee overtaking President Donald Trump’s vote count in key swing states Pennsylvania and Georgia, while his lead in Nevada doubled late Friday morning.

The Trump campaign has insisted, however, that this election is “not over", and while Mr Biden continues to make gains, votes from key states are still trickling in.

In Nevada, a fresh batch of ballots pushed Mr Biden further ahead of his Republican rival, with the Democratic nominee leading by 22,657 votes, roughly doubling his lead from earlier that morning.

With 87 per cent of precincts reporting, Mr Biden had secured 49.8 per cent of the vote with 632,558 ballots, while Mr Trump had held 48 per cent of the vote with 609,901 ballots.

With ballots having been slow to trickle in from the Silver State, Nevada’s counting efforts were the target of a surge of memes shared across social media sites mocking its slow speed.

The state is the smallest of the remaining few states to be declared, with only six electoral votes, but it could nonetheless be the one that puts the former vice president over the top.

Like other states, Nevada has been slow to return its results because of a dramatic uptick in early voting as well as mail-in ballots, which the state sent out to all registered voters.

Trump has falsely claimed that this has opened the door to mass electoral fraud. However, the president has not been able to back up his claims with any evidence.

On Friday, the president said he would not concede to Biden, as his Democratic challenger claimed the lead in Pennsylvania with 98 percent of precincts reporting.

As of Friday morning, Biden held 49.6 per cent of the vote in Pennsylvania with 3,324,096 ballots cast in his favour, while Trump claimed 49.3 per cent, with 3,304,471 votes.
