Group trolls Trump with giant mocking ad in Las Vegas

A pro-Biden campaign group has set up a billboard in Las Vegas that is listing president Donald Trump‘s “failures” during the coronavirus pandemic.

Campaign group, MeidasTouch, who owns the domain name MAGA2020.com, announced the purchase via its Twitter profile on Monday evening, that included a short video of the ad.

On Monday, MeidasTouch tweeted: “Thanks to your support we were able to purchase one of the largest Billboards in Vegas this week to remind everyone of Trump’s failures and the virtual library of those failures on MAGA2020.com.”

The billboard, which is part of the “#DonaldTrumpCanceledAmerica” ad campaign, cost the group $35,000 (£26,438) and will play 24 hours a day on the strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the rest of the week.

In a statement on its website, the group wrote that the billboard “highlights all the activities that Trump has cancelled due to his mismanaged response to the pandemic, including college football, weddings, visiting grandma, mail, jobs and the economy”.

The US currently has more Covid-19 cases and deaths than any other country in the world, and Mr Trump’s response to the pandemic has been widely criticised.

The number of confirmed cases for the country as a whole fell between April and May, but after states started to ease social distancing measures, with the support of the president, the amount of positive tests rose again.

According to a tracking project hosted by Johns Hopkins University, in the US as a whole, some 5.4 million people have tested positive for coronavirus, while the death toll has reached at least 171,343.

Formed in March, MeidasTouch, that is made up of three brothers, Brett, Ben and Jordan Meiselas, has so far raised more than $300,000 (£226,525) following the release of a series of videos that have criticised the president and his policies.

The group, that is urging its supporters to vote for Joe Biden in November’s presidential election, describe Mr Trump on its website as “the most dangerous president in American history”.

MeidasTouch started to gain traction after one of its ads was retweeted by George Conway, the co-founder of The Lincoln project, a Republican political action committee that is aiming to prevent the reelection of Mr Trump.

The video, that was released in April, quoted former US president Ronald Reagan posing the question: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” as images of empty supermarkets, long Covid-19 testing lines and headlines reporting on record unemployment figures flashed on the screen, according to CNN.

In the last week, the group has released videos that criticise the president and Fox News host Sean Hannity, alongside ads that praise presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, and his running mate Kamala Harris.

In a statement about the billboard campaign, MeidasTouch co-founder Brett Meiselas told the Hill Reporter that “Donald Trump’s response to the Covid-19 crisis has been an unmitigated disaster that has cancelled America as we know it".

“People across America are being forced to cancel trips to see grandma, weddings, college football, and more, not to mention Trump’s deliberate effort to destroy our mail,” he said.

He added: “Voters will reject this undeniable failure come November and cancel Donald Trump.”
