Super Tuesday: Joe Biden confident he will get California delegates

Joe Biden has won the Virginia primary, with a runaway win in the state announced shortly after polls closed in the state.

The results serve to bolster Mr Biden's claim that he is the moderate candidate to coalesce behind in the race, and follows just days after a decisive win in the South Carolina primary on Saturday.

And, they show a massive reversal in fortunes for him in the state, with a recent Monmouth University poll showing Mr Biden in third place there, behind Bernie Sanders and Mike Bloomberg.

According to early exit polls, Virginians had a highly favourable view of Mr Biden, with 66 per cent viewing him favourable while just 33 per cent having an unfavourable view.

Mr Sanders was less beloved in the state, with 47 per cent having a favourable view of him, and 48 per cent having an unfavourable view.

While incomplete, the results do not bode well for Mr Bloomberg, whose name is on the ballot today for the first time after he decided to skip the first four states to vote.

Mr Bloomberg has spent over $400 million of his personal fortune, and much of his argument has been that he is a moderate candidate who has the resources and temperament to take on Donald Trump in November.

Virginia has 99 delegates to hand out, and we will see how things shake up when all the votes are counted.
