A female Marine discovered a hidden recording device aboard a US Navy ship, prompting an investigation and concerns of sexual harassment.
The Sixth Fleet confirmed a “recording device” was located “in a head” aboard the USS Arlington as it was stationed in Greece.
The Marine, whose name has not been released in order to protect her identity, reported the device in March.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) launched an investigation shortly after to better understand how the device came to be placed in the women’s bathroom of the military ship and whether any female Marines were recorded while aboard the vessel.
Commander Kyle Raines said in a statement the military would take “all necessary actions to ensure the safety and privacy of the victim.”
“The Navy/Marine Corps team takes all reports of sexual harassment seriously, and are committed to thoroughly investigating these allegations and providing resources and care to victims of sexual harassment.”
A military official reportedly told NBC News the device was capable of recording images, though it was unclear whether that meant it had video recording capabilities or if it could just take photos.
In 2015, a Navy sailor was charged with secretly recording female trainees as they undressed for showers and was sentenced to more than a year in prison.
The USS Arlington is a transport ship, home-ported in Norfolk, Virginia, the state from which it receives its name.
