AOC suggests cocktail recipes to sip while sorting different political issues: 'Hard Brexit - a straight shot of bathtub gin'
They are described as 'Cocktails for the Revolution'
Relax. The revolution need not be dry.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York congresswoman and former bartender, has suggested a series of special cocktail recipes for those working for change.
The recipes, which include one named Hard Brexit ā āa straight shot of bathtub gin, with no imported botanicalsā ā followed an online suggestion by journalist Anand Giridharadas, who recently said the 29-year-old congresswoman had in a month āchanged Americaās discourse about billionaires and the common goodā.
Mr Giridharadas, author of a 2018 book about global inequality, Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World, said he suspected Ms Ocasio-Cortez āmay be too busy slaying dragons to volunteer her bartending skills, but I do believe she might be persuaded to submit a signature cocktail recipeā.
He added: āIt will be green, it will be new, and, at $4 before 5 p.m., it will be a deal.ā
Ms Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, responded in style with six ideas, described as ācocktails for the revolutionā. In addition to the Hard Brexit, she suggested:
* World w/o a #GreenNewDeal: a Bitter Dark nā Stormy.
* Clean transport: an Aviation, but hold the crĆØme de violette.
* Bridges, Not Walls: a Mezcal Greyhound.
* Paid Parental Leave: Mocktail margarita.
* Policy Failure: anything w/ GoldschlƤg.
The idea for the cocktails came as Ms Ocasio-Cortez and senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, last week unveiled a proposal termed the Green New Deal, they say will tackle climate change, transform the economy, and create large numbers of jobs in renewable energy.
It suggested creating a carbon neutral economy within a decade, and followed a UN-backed climate report published last year that said the effects of climate change to be irreversible and unavoidable if carbon emissions were were drastically reduced within 12 years.
āEven the solutions that we have considered big and bold are nowhere near the scale of the actual problem that climate change presents to us,ā Ms Ocasio-Cortez said.
āIt could be part of a larger solution, but no one has actually scoped out what that larger solution would entail. And so thatās really what weāre trying to accomplish with the Green New Deal.ā
