AOC raises $200K to fight food and housing insecurity during video game battle
New York congresswoman teamed up with Canada’s Jagmeet Singh on Twitch
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised more than $200,000 to fight poverty by playing video games online.
The New York congresswoman took to Twitch with Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh to play the popular video game Among Us.
“We did it!” the politician tweeted.
“$200k raised in one livestream (on a whim!) for eviction defense, food pantries, and more. This is going to make such a difference for those who need it most right now.”
And in another tweet she complimented the Canadian system of government.
“Thank you for reminding us that another world is not only possible, but just a few hours’ drive from NYC,” she wrote.
Mr Singh, a fellow democratic socialist, is the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party.
He also took to Twitter to thank Ms Ocasio-Cortez.
“It was awesome chatting with you about how we can build a better world,” he wrote.
“In Canada, things aren't perfect and we face many of the same challenges. But, together we can do better. My mom always taught me: When we lift each other up, we all rise.”
Before the election Ms Ocasio-Cortez used Twitch for a get out the vote effort that was streamed by 430,000 people, the third biggest even in Twitch history.
