Georgia senator Kelly Loeffler quarantining following inconclusive coronavirus test results

Georgia senator Kelly Loeffler is quarantining after receiving inconclusive Covid-19 test results, following a string of campaign events last week.

On Saturday evening, Ms Loeffler’s campaign team announced that the senator had started qurantining after multiple Coronavirus tests gave inconclusive results.

Her campaign team said that a rapid test she took on Friday came back negative, but a PCR test taken at the same time came back positive.

After consulting with medical officials, Ms Loeffler, 49, was tested again on Saturday, but the results came back inconclusive, campaign spokesperson Stephen Lawson said in a statement.

Although the senator remains asymptomatic, she will stay in quarantine until she receives conclusive test results, according to NBC News.

Mr Lawson added that the senator is notifying people that she came in to direct contact with over the last few days.

The 49-year-old took part in multiple campaign events last week, in the build up to a runoff election in January after neither Ms Loeffler or her Democratic opponent Raphael Warnock received more than 50 per cent of the vote in the 3 November election.

The senator has teamed up at events with fellow Georgia Republican senator David Perdue, who will face Demcoratic challenger Jon Ossoff in a separate runoff election in January.

Ms Loeffler attended two campaign events in Georgia on Friday, alongside US vice president Mike Pence and Mr Perdue.

All three were pictured not wearing face masks as they travelled on a bus to the two campaign events. It is currently unclear whether Mr Pence and Mr Perdue are affected.

Mr Warnock, a reverend, tweeted his support to Ms Loeffler on Saturday night.

“Senator Loeffler is in my thoughts. I pray that her test results come back negative and that she is back on the campaign trail soon. Blessings,” he wrote.

Two of Ms Loeffler’s staff members tested positive for coronavirus last month, but the senator remained unaffected at that time.

According to a tracking project hosted by Johns Hopkins University, there are now more than 12 million people who have tested positive for coronavirus in the US. The death toll has reached at least 255,909.
