City in Florida declares first week of February ‘Donald Trump Week’

Representative Anthony Sabatini previously proposed to rename highway after former president

A small city in Florida has declared the first week of February “Donald J Trump week” in honour of the former president.  

Officials in Frostproof, Polk County, made the decision to confirm a proclamation on Tuesday that allotted the first six days of February to the former president.

Representative Anthony Sabatini spoke in favour of the proclamation at the meeting, celebrating that the city was “first in the nation to do this.”  

“Great to be in the City of Frostproof FL tonight to speak in favor of a Proclamation declaring this week ‘Donald Trump Week,’” he wrote on Twitter.

The mayor’s proclamation praised Mr Trump’s apparent overwhelming support in the city during the election, pointing out that he received 76 per cent of the vote in Frostproof.

“While president, the United States gained millions of new jobs, including more than 1.2 million manufacturing and construction jobs while designation 9,000 opportunity zones,” the document read.

The proclamation also praised “ new unemployment record lows” and said that the US engaged in “no new wars under the Trump administration.”

Austin Gravley, a member of the Frostproof City Council, reportedly told WFLA the proclamation is the "first of its kind” and said he was “proud to be a part” of the effort.

Some social media users did not appear to be as enthusiastic about the city’s declaration as council officials, with some decrying its placement in Black History Month.

“My little city of Frostproof Florida has decided that during Black History Month that they were going to promote Donald Trump for a whole week from the 1st to 6th. @KamalaHarris @POTUS I do not have words!,” one city resident, posted.

“Sure, lets dedicate the first week of #BlackHistoryMonth in honor of the most racist president of our generation,” another user posted.

The city’s population consists of around 3,180 people, of which more than 90 percent belong to non-Hispanic white and Hispanic white ethnic groups, The Hill reported.

In January, Rep Sabatini also sponsored an amendment to rename US Highway 27 as the “president Donald J Trump highway.”  

“Looking forward to working on this important designation honoring one of the greatest presidents in American History,” he said.

Following an attack on the US Capitol by pro-Trump supporters, Democratic representatives Joaquin Castro and Linda T Sánchez announced plans to introduce legislation banning federal property from ever being named after the former president, The Washington Post reported.

Rep Sánchez told PEOPLE that she believed “not even a bench, no airport, no highway, no school — nothing” should be named after Mr Trump for his role in the insurrection.
