Early reports misidentified the attacker as a Trump supporter, but The Lantern reported that he suffer from Asperger's Syndrome.
The protester is looking to have the charges filed early Tuesday afternoon dropped.
As students gathered in the Ohio Union at Ohio State University, a man standing on a staircase speaking into a bullhorn tumbled down to the ground as somebody came up behind him and committed the apparent assault.
Video of the incident appears to show the suspect run down the staircase shouting “You idiot!” as the victim said, “You don’t have to compromise,” to a room full of protesters.
After the speaker was tackled, a man in a Guy Fawkes mask rushed the attacker and punched him, as onlookers pulled him away.
Police officers quickly responded, pulling the attacker away as protesters shouted “shame”.
Peaceful protests have been underway in as many as 25 US cities in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidential election win.
