A woman has shot dead her husband after mistaking him for an intruder.

The 53-year-old woman shot her 57-year-old husband shortly after 11am yesterday at their home in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward, police said.

Neither the name of the victim or his wife was released, while other family members were being informed. No charges have been filed.

Police say the case will be turned over to the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office for review.
