US wrestler brings a Donald Trump flag into Mexico City ring

There are boos, jeers, and whistling as a blonde gentleman, covered in fake tan, makes his way out in front of a large Mexican crowd. But this 'villainous character' is not Donald Trump.

Pro wrestler Sam Polinsky, aka Sam Adonis, has become a sensation in the country’s capital for adopting the persona of a patriotic Trump supporter as he dances about the ring - holding an American flag graced with a photo of the new leader’s face.

As the US President has been notably unpopular here – infamously pledging to crack down on immigration and build a wall along the US-Mexico border – Polinsky has chosen to make use of the resentment to build his own love-to-hate, flamboyant character.

"Right now, I would be considered by the Mexican public as the most malicious bad guy they have," He said before his match on February 12, which the American lost.

Polinsky relishes the jeering in pro wrestling's extravaganza of good vs. evil, with Mexico's "luche libre" having a tradition of foreign villains.

"I'm very proud of the fact that I am able to evoke a genuine hatred," he added. "A genuine hate which is generally lost in professional wrestling due to the fact that most people realize that it is what it is – it's more along the lines of a show."

"I can whip up a frenzy in the arena that no other wrestler can, getting people to forget about their jobs, forget about their problems at home for that 25 to 30 minutes in the ring," he added.

"All that they care about is getting their frustrations out on Sam Adonis in the ring, and for that I'm proud. What they want to say to Donald Trump they can say to me and feel good about it."

As for Polinsky's real views on the US President, he may not agree with criticisms made towards Mexico, but he does admire Trump's approach to politics.

"I embrace the fact that he [Trump] is a villain," the wrestler said. "He's going to do what he has to do and what he thinks is right. If you don't agree with him, that doesn't really bother him.

"He's going to push forward with what he thinks is right, and the fact that he's embraced his public perception, whether it's good or bad, I have respect for that."
