World's tallest Great Dane 'Giant' George dies

The gentle giant rose to fame for his record breaking size

Tributes from across the world have continued to flood in for 'Gentle giant' George, the world's tallest dog, after his death was announced on Facebook.

At a staggering 43 inches, or almost five ft tall and seven ft long, the Gunniess world record holder towers above most other blue Great Danes his age, and also weighs 100lb more than the average Dane.

George become somewhat of a celebrity after making appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, ABC's Good Morning America and Live with Regis and Kelly, becoming famous for his huge size and gentle demeanour.

He even became the subject of a book entitled Giant George: Living with the World's Biggest Dog.

His death was announced by owners David and Christie Nasser on George's Facebook page last week, who said he passed away peacefully. Tributes from his global fan club have already started pouring in on social media.

George, who has been owned by the couple since he was seven weeks old, would have turned eight next month.
