Luanda (AP) - The government said yesterday it would not surrender Angola's second-largest city to Unita rebels despite an artillery onslaught that has boosted Huambo's death toll to an estimated 10,000 since mid- January. Two army battalions of about 500 soldiers each, backed by MiG-23 fighter jets, were en route to Huambo to reinforce government troops pinned down in the city centre.

The army said Unita artillery opened up on thousands of civilians trying to flee Huambo on Monday, killing at least 1,000.
