Archbishop faces fraud investigation
Rome - Salvatore Cassisa, Archbishop of Monreale in Sicily, has been notified he is under investigation for alleged fraud against the EU. Church- owned vineyards received a grant of 750m lire (pounds 295,276) for ceasing production, but the amount of land set aside was allegedly overstated. Last July, Palermo magistrates warned the Archbishop he faced investigation for corruption and abuse of office in connection with bribes allegedly paid on a contract to renovate the cathedral at Monreale.
