The policewoman who killed an American contractor in Kabul is an Iranian who came to Afghanistan 10 years ago with her husband and obtained a fake ID through him, it has been revealed.

The Afghan interior ministry said she had displayed "unstable behaviour" but that the investigation revealed no links to militants.

The policewoman identified as Sgt Nargas shot Joseph Griffin, 49, from Georgia, in the first "insider" shooting of a foreigner by a woman. She is now in custody.
