Sources in the Burmese government have indicated that John Yettaw, an American sentenced to seven years hard labour for swimming to the house of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, will be freed and deported.

This comes after a visit to Burma by US Senator Jim Webb, the first formal contact between the military regime and Washington. Yettaw's actions led to Ms Suu Kyi being tried and her house arrest being extended by 18 months.
