Bacha Khan university attack: Army officials enter campus to tackle suspected Taliban gunmen
Video footage shows people embracing their loved ones after being evacuated
Video footage has emerged showing the moment security forces entered a university campus in Pakistan to bring a violent attack carried out by suspected Taliban gunmen under control.
At least 21 people lost their lives after militants opened fire at the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda. Another 51 people were injured.
After security forces entered the campus, a gun battle raged on for several hours on Wednesday morning. Four gunmen were killed, according to the army.
Umar Mansoor, a senior Pakistan Taliban commander, initially claimed responsibility for the attack and said four of his men were involved.
However, the BBC later reported that the group’s main spokesman, Mohammad Khurasani, denied responsibility and called the attack “un-Islamic”.
In the video footage, members of the army can be seen entering the campus gates as rescue personnel rush to the scene.
It also shows people embracing their loved ones after being evacuated from inside the university.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said after the attack: “We are determined and resolved in our community to wipe out the menace of terrorism from our homeland.”
