Salman Khan is a pampered star of Bollywood: a man of great wealth, good looks, fame and vanity whose mood swings and love affairs make the Indian gossip columns.

This weekend Khan's Toyota Land Cruiser – in which the film star was reportedly returning from a party – mounted the pavement in Bombay, ploughed though a group of sleeping men, and crashed into a shop window.

Noora Bahra, a 38-year-old migrant labourer, was killed; four others were injured.

Police reportedly say Khan – who handed himself over to them eight hours later – was at the wheel. He denies it. After being charged with causing death by rash and negligent driving, he was released on 950 rupees (£13) bail.

Newspapers declared the actor "spoilt" and a "superbrat".

India's Sunday Express ran the headline "Mowing Down in Mumbai starring Salman Khan" and accused the actor of "strutting with cops".
