A bomb disposal specialist who gained 20 years' experience after joining the Army as a 'boy soldier' is the latest British soldier to be killed in Afghanistan.

Warrant Officer Class 2 David Markland, 36, had undertaken eight tours of Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan before his death on Monday as he attempted to disarm a roadside bomb near Nad-e-Ali in Helmand. The loss of WO2 Markland, a married father of two from Euxton, in Lancashire, brings the total of British troops killed in the conflict to 256. He was described as a 'talismanic figure' by his commanding officer.
