A 17-year-old boy reportedly locked his mother in their house and set it on fire after she refused to buy him a new bike and phone.

Soma Manna suffered 90 per cent burn injuries and was taken to hospital after neighbours managed to unlock the door to the house in Jagatpur, India.

The 40-year-old came running out while burning from head to waist, locals told the Times of India.

“She kept screaming and running from one end of the alley to the other in excruciating pain till locals doused the fire with blankets,” an eyewitness told the paper.

Neighbours are said to have caught her son before he could flee.

As she recovered in hospital, Ms Manna, 40, said her son had set her on fire.

Police arrested the boy and he was sent to a juvenile home.

He has been charged with attempted murder and voluntarily causing grievous harm.

The teenager had been due to sit exams and his mother had promised to buy him what he wanted when he had finished them, their landlord’s wife told the Times of India.

“When the mother denied, he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire,” she said.
