Rescuers were searching yesterday for a teenage British girl who has gone missing on the slopes of the highest mountain in south-east Asia.

Ellie James, 17, disappeared on Thursday while she was descending the popular 13,455ft (4,094m) Mount Kinabulu on Borneo Island, in poor visibility and cold winds. She and her brother became separated from a group of 12 British trekkers, which included her parents. The group had started climbing the mountain on Wednesday.

As the party descended from the summit, the girl's parents told trek leaders that their daughter and son, 15, had gone missing. The boy, Henry James, was found a few hours later but there was no sign of his sister. Mountain guides continued their search in poor weather yesterday.
