Former US President Jimmy Carter arrived in Pyongyang yesterday on a private mission to bring home an American sentenced to eight years' hard labour for trespassing.

A North Korean girl handed Carter flowers and saluted him after he landed in an unmarked plane. It was unclear whether his trip would include a visit with the communist regime's leader, Kim Jong-il, but the statesman shared a warm handshake with the No 2 official, Kim Yong-nam, before they sat down for talks yesterday.
