A dog owner reportedly poured water on his pet and left her to freeze to death on one of the chilliest nights of the year in the coldest city on Earth.
Shocking footage shows the one-year-old canine frozen to the floor of her outside kennel in Yakutsk, just 280 miles south of the Arctic Circle in Siberia.
Able to moved just a single paw, the creature can be heard whimpering in pain during the 22-second clip.
After concerned neighbours raised the alarm, volunteers were able to free the animal and rush it to a vet.
But the creature, who suffered hypothermia in minus 32C temperatures, could not be saved and was reportedly given a lethal injection.
“The eyes, I will never forget them," one of the volunteers told the Siberian Times. "Did you ever see a man who wanted to live but who was already dying? The dog had exactly the same eyes, understanding everything, just unable to explain.”
A petition to have action taken against the unnamed owner has been signed by more than 10,000 people amid apparent police inaction over the case.
Sergey Boyarsky, an MP in Moscow, has also demanded the owner be prosecuted.

By international standards Russia has limited animal welfare protections, although under the country's penal code causing injury or death to an animal with malicious or mercenary motives or with sadistic methods, or in the presence of minors, is prohibited.
Aside from that there are no animal welfare laws addressing farm animals, companion animals, animals used in research, animals used for work, or animals used for recreation, according to the non profit World Animal Protection.
