Election polls predict lead for India's socialist party

Parliamentary elections in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, entered their final stage yesterday, with early polling showing an apparent victory for the Samajwadi (Socialist) party.

Uttar Pradesh's 200 million population is so large that, were it to become an independent state, it would be the world's fifth largest nation.
