Hair-raising acrobatics such as these might look exhilarating, but in this case, they also carry a serious moral message. Members of the aerial dance troupe Project Bandaloop pictured here claim to be exploring "the relationship between movement and gravity" to raise awareness of humans' interaction with their environment.

Their backdrop at their latest performance yesterday was the historic Golkonda Fort in Hyderabad, India, built in the 13th century and once the centre of a flourishing diamond trade. The dancers and riggers of the troupe, based in San Francisco, have now performed to half-a-million people.

Other performance sites have included Yosemite Falls in California. Yesterday's event raised money for the Society to Save Rocks, which aims to preserve granite formations in the Deccan Plateau, stretching across southern India.
