A new law was passed today to protect women against sexual violence in response to the gang rape of a student in Delhi in December.

The law, which still requires the President’s signature, makes stalking, voyeurism and sexual harassment a crime. It provides for the death penalty for repeat offenders or for rapes that lead to the victim’s death. It will also be a crime for police officers not to open cases when complaints of sexual attacks are made.

“It’s a significant moment… [but] much, much more needs to be done,” said Vrinda Grover, a lawyer and women’s rights activist.
