An Indian woman has allegedly staged her own kidnapping and demanded a ransom from her husband.

The 29-year-old woman from Mumbai's Mira Road district reportedly tried to extract Rs one million (£11,338) from him.

Police were able trace her and no case has been brought forward, as her husband chose not to press charges, Times of India reports.

Hours after she left their home to teach a coaching class, her husband was reportedly sent a WhatsApp message from her phone demanding the ransom.

A photograph appearing to show her lying unconscious with a mouth gagged was also sent to confirm her kidnap.

Six police teams were involved hunting down the kidnapper with the wife's phone put on tracking.

When police checked the CCTV of her last known location, the train station, they saw the woman walking alone.

She was arrested while attempting to board a train to Churchgate, said Inspector Vilas Sanap from Kashmira police station.

On confessing to the kidnap hoax, she said she borrowed the idea from a crime thriller she had watched on TV.

She told officers she wanted to teach her husband a lesson for allegedly not sharing the profits fairly from the coaching class business they jointly run.

Her husband explained he would not press charges, allowing to her go free, as he did not want his two young children to be publicly traumatised by the incident.
