Man arrested over pensioner's death in in Hong Kong
Friends have paid tribute to a retired Salvation Army officer from Essex found dead while on holiday in Hong Kong. A 29-year-old man has been arrested in the main ferry harbour and was being questioned by police yesterday.
The body of Major Janet Gilson, 64, was found at her niece's home in Lamma, the third-largest island in Hong Kong, on Saturday. She had been reported missing three days previously.
Major Gilson had retired recently and lived in Leigh-on-Sea. She leaves an elderly mother, Silvia, who lives in the same Essex town.
In a statement, Major Carol Bailey, regional manager for the Salvation Army, said: "It was with great sadness and shock that we learned of the death of Major Janet Gilson."
A police spokesman said she suffered head injuries and a post-mortem examination would be held.
