Monsoon rain in Nepal has left at least 15 people dead and six missing after sparking landslides and flash floods across the country.

In the capital city of Kathmandu, streets were left under several feet of water, while three members of the same family were killed after the walls of their house collapsed.

Another 13 people have been left injured across the country, according to government figures released on Friday.

Twenty of the nation’s 77 districts have been affected by the rains, particularly impacting the east of the country and its southern plains and rivers originating in the Himalayas burst their banks.

Footage from the region showed locals escaping with their possessions piled on their heads as they waded through waist deep water, while others were evacuated by police on rubber boats.

Army spokesman Bigyan Dev Pandey said troops had evacuated 150 people “and are on the standby for rescue in different areas,"

The nation, which is home to almost 30 million people and attracts more than a million tourists a year, regularly experiences flooding and landslides during its monsoon season – which falls between June and August.

Last year the rainy season led to the deaths of nearly 150 people.
