Two Chinese diplomats have been killed and another wounded in a shooting in a restaurant in the central Philippines, according to police.

A Chinese attacker opened fire with a pistol in the restaurant while they were attending a birthday lunch, police said.

The wounded diplomat was Song Ronghua, China's consul general to the Philippine city of Cebu. He was reportedly taken to hospital for treatment.

"We're still trying to determine the motive for the shooting," Chief Superintendent Prudencio Banas was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying.

He said the people killed in the attack were the deputy consul-general and a finance officer at the Chinese consulate in Cebu.

A Chinese woman has been taken into custody following the shooting, Banas said.

"We have the suspect, a Chinese woman, but we would need translators to interview her on what really happened," he was quoted as saying.

The foreign ministry and China's embassy in Manila declined to comment to the media.
