Salman Rushdie has accused Indian police of lying to him about a supposed death threat to keep him away from the Jaipur Literature Festival. "I've investigated, and believe I was lied to. I am outraged," he said on Twitter.

His comments followed reports in the Indian media that police in Mumbai had not warned police in Rajasthan of a threat to the writer. Many believe the affair is linked to the government not wanting to upset Muslim voters ahead of elections.
