A Scottish man has died in Thailand after cutting himself on a smashed mirror and bleeding to death, it has been reported.

Iain Mackay, 40, from Stornoway, died at Hua Hin hospital in Thailand’s Prachuap Khiri Khan Province last week. He had been working with a seismic research company.

The Press and Journal reports that Hua Hin police confirmed no crime had been committed, though the exact circumstances of Mackay’s death are not yet known and are under investigation.

Friends of Mackay told the newspaper he had quarrelled with his girlfriend and another man at a bar earlier in the day.

In an interview, Hua Hin police told journalist Iain Maciver that Mackay had become angry when had gone to meet his girlfriend at a shop and found she was not there. He had then kicked a mirror on a wall.

According to the police report, Mackay began bleeding after the mirror was smashed and someone took him to Hua Hin hospital, where he later died.

A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Hua Hin, Thailand, on 3 April. We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time.”
