A fire tore through a slum on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka yesterday, killing at least 11 people and injuring many more.
A fire department official, Ataur Rahman, said the blaze broke out at 3am at the Bou Bazar slum near Mohammadpur. It took firefighters four hours to bring the flames under control.
Mr Rahman said the bodies of six women, four men and a child were recovered from the rubble of the slum, which is home to low-income workers such as day labourers and rickshaw pullers. The cause of the blaze was under investigation last night.
