Hardline nationalists from the JHU party of Buddhist monks staged a sit-in protest in Colombo yesterday against a report by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon calling for both sides in the country's civil war to be investigated for war crimes.

The report said shelling by government forces killed tens of thousands of civilians, while the Tamil Tigers had used civilians as human shields.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has rejected the report and denounced external interference in Sri Lanka's affairs.
