Taiwan earthquake: Baby girl rescued from underneath rubble

More than 120 people are still thought to be buried beneath the wreckage

A six-month-old baby has been rescued from beneath an apartment building that collapsed following an earthquake in Taiwan that killed at least 26 people.

The girl was trapped for 30 hours after the 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the city of Tainin at around 4am on Saturday. She was taken to hospital following the rescue.

More than 120 people were thought to remain buried beneath the rubble of the same collapsed apartment building.

The government in Tainan said more than 170 people had been rescued from the 17-storey building, which folded like an accordion after the quake struck.

Mao Yi-chen, 20, was rescued soon after the quake hit and her older sister Mao Yi-hsuan was pulled out on Sunday in a serious condition.

A rescue worker had handed over a photo album and homemade cards found next to her for her family to collect, said local official Wang Ding-yu.

"He said that 'maybe your home is damaged, but memories of the family can last,"' Mr Wang said.

Footage also shows a young boy among those being rescued from the rubble, who the rescue team say is "one of the lucky ones".

Firefighters, soldiers, police and medical staff were all present at the scene alongside volunteers, combing through the rubble looking for those still unaccounted for.

“Right now we are in the midst of trying to rescue over 10 people,” Tainin Mayor William Lai told Sky News.

“At the moment, the rescue force consists of special search teams from various counties and cities across Taiwan who have come to provide assistance.”
