Termites, storms and neglect have damaged part of Imelda Marcos's legendary shoe collection and other possessions. The former first lady and her dictator husband left them behind when an uprising in 1986 forced the couple to flee to the US.

Hundreds of items of the late Ferdinand Marcos's clothing have also begun to fray after being stored without protection at the presidential palace and later at Manila's National Museum, officials said yesterday.

The Marcoses fled at the climax of an army-backed "people power" revolt. They left behind staggering amounts of personal belongings, including at least 1,220 pairs of Imelda Marcos's shoes.
