Peace activists gather in Hong Kong yesterday to mark the 21st anniversary of China's crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations, which culminated in the deaths of hundreds of workers and students in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

The annual candlelight vigil at Hong Kong's Victoria Park was large enough to fill six football pitches, although were no official attendance estimates.

China's government maintains that the protests crushed on the night of 3 June 1989 were a "counter-revolutionary riot".
