The Australian Prime Minister John Howard was jostled and pelted with rubbish by students at a university in the southern city of Adelaide.
The students were demonstrating against the government's immigration and higher education policies.
About 200 protesters closed in on Howard as he arrived at the University of Adelaide to discuss planned government legislation on embryonic stem cell research.
Howard was not hurt and there was no immediate word of any arrests.
