Relatives of Noleen Hayson Pal, the murdered ex-wife of the Sydney siege gunman, have criticised authorities for allowing her ex-husband to remain free on bail.

Man Haron Monis used a shotgun to hold 17 people hostage at the Lindt Chocolat Cafe during rush-hour on Monday morning. He and two hostages died during in the crossfire as police stormed the café and freed those still trapped inside.

In December last year, Monis was charged with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife and bailed, charges his lawyer said he “vehemently denied”.

Ms Pal was stabbed repeatedly and set alight in western Sydney in April 2013, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Ayyut Khalik, Ms Pal’s godfather, told NBC News Monis became physically abusive towards Pal after she gave birth to the couple’s first child.

He said Monis, an Iranian refugee, would force Ms Pal to wear a hijab and banned her from talking to anyone outside of the family.

He said: "We found out he was beating her and stuff."

After her death, Mr Khalik said the family were “very, very happy” when Mr Khalik was arrested. “Finally justice was done – and then two weeks later we find out he was out on bail. Who do you blame for this?”

"They should have put him away and thrown away the key.

Talat Khalik, Pal’s ‘god-brother’ also expressed his fury over her death on Facebook.

"Fu**n lucky tey got u before we did now.rest in hell f****n asshole [sic]."

His mother Momina Khalik, who like Mr Khalkik lives in California, added: "y the first place they let him free on the sydney streets they should have let him rot in the jail his a f****n sick animal [sic].

Monis was convicted and sentenced last year to 300 hours of community service for sending what a judge called "grossly offensive" letters to families of soldiers killed in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2009. Earlier this year, he was also charged with the 2002 sexual assault of a woman. He had been out on bail on all the charges.
