A man has said he will give away his engagement ring for free to a deserving couple after splitting up with his fiancée.

The gesture is open to bids from any couple who can prove why the ring would bring them happiness and can explain why they would deserve it.

In the post titled 'A little bit of happiness from me to you' on Reddit, "what_choice" writes: “I have decided to give away my old engagement ring. I have only heard horror stories of people trying to sell their rings and being insulted with sub-par offers from pawn shops, jewellers etc. and thought I would attempt to pass it on to a deserving couple.”

For sceptical readers, he added: “I am serious! This is not a ploy or a fake. It’s a nice ring and I wish for it to bring happiness and joy.”

The ring, which the user says he believes is a size ‘L’, is silver or white gold, with a circular white diamond framed by a ring of smaller gems, featuring further diamonds on the band. He declined to disclose the jewellery’s value.

For couples wishing to be considered for the gift, the user posted the following instructions: “I’d like to know why you would like the ring and to get married, and proof you are a couple. Something to convince myself and Reddit that you’re legitimate.”

One slight catch to any interested couples is that you will need to meet the man in Sydney to pick up the ring in person.

A number of Reddit users have posted tales of why they should be the ones to be awarded the ring.

One wrote: “For the past year and a half I have been with this beautiful girl and her 2 wonderful kids (4 and 2) which I have been raising as my own. We are a struggling couple as my job doesn't pay very well and I lack qualifications to go further and she is at uni studying nursing.

“I have been running through my head for the past few months on how to get enough money together to buy her a ring. We have spoken about getting engaged and we both think it's the next step and are ready. A ring like this would take a lifetime of strain off my finances.”

Another wrote: “So my partner and I were fighting immigration to get my visa for the three long years, while everyone on the same boat seemed to get it, & on a day before Christmas eve we finally got it after multiple rejections, we've been together for 5 years.

“In July 2015, we...eloped and got married just with six of our closest friends and no one else as we didn't know if I'll have to leave the country abruptly, cause we had spent every bit of our money on migration lawyers it was low key as it comes .

"[Neither] Her family nor mine know that we're married, but I would love to give her a public proposal after asking her mum as my beautiful wife has been rock throughout all of this and I just wanna make her day.”

The ring’s owner has said that he will make his decision in the next 48 hours.
