McDonald’s to trial home delivery service

Chain restaurant delivery services already available in United States, Australia and Thailand

McDonald’s has launched its latest trial attempt at delivering fast food to people’s homes.

The chain restaurant giant, which serves approximately 68 million customers daily over 119 countries, will begin testing home delivery services in New Zealand. It follows the recent registration of the “McDelivery” trademark in the country.

Similar delivery schemes are already available in the United States, Australia and Thailand.

There are no plans to bring the service to the UK.

A statement on the McDonald's website reads: "We are committed to serving our customers hot food, fresh from the kitchen.

"We have trialled delivery services both at select locations in the UK and in a number of European markets, but it is currently not a priority for the UK."

The company says if an "unauthorised company" were to launch a deliver yservice in the UK it would "not be able to guarantee the quality of the food or that it would be delivered with the high level of customer service we would expect."

“In addition, operating a delivery service which advertises our menu and products using McDonald’s intellectual property without a licence from McDonald’s would constitute trade mark infringement.”

Earlier this year, a McDonald's branch in the US became the first franchise to test all-you-can-eat fries.

The 6,500 square foot restaurant being built in St Joseph, Missouri, has kiosks to take orders, allowing customers to customise their burgers and desserts.
